Kauai is not as chaotic as Oahu with military bases, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach and more that attracts visitors. The Garden Isle is more laid back, intended for hiking and relaxing. Never fear, Kauai has great coffee, chocolate, and delicious dining. And don’t forget the Shave Ice. What a treat.
I asked my husband to take me to Kauai, The Big Empty. I want to arrive on the island tired from a long flight and sip rich coffee. Kauai coffee holds its own against the well-known Kona beans.

Colors of Kauai
In my memory, confirmed by photos, Kauai is blue and green and that red, red dirt. Go to the Waimea Canyon and gaze out at the spots of red covering the walls. The tropical flowers are diverse—especially for a Pennsylvanian—with stunning petals framed with bright leaves.
Even hiking the first two miles, of the Napali Coast Trail, you’ll be color-coated. Go with it, ya hear? Don’t worry about the dirt and grime caking into your shoes, socks, hiking poles … everything. Breathe, savor the experience of hiking on boulders and through mud and oh my God have you seen that view?
Kauai is Park Land
So many parks! Wailua River State Park is near Lihue. The waterfalls are dazzling. Finding trailhead is often a challenge. But you’re on vacation so relax and ask the locals for directions. Once you’ve gotten to the trail, markings are clear and easy to follow.
