Since my first trip to Prague years ago, I’ve met many people with it on their travel list. If the Czech Republic is on yours, get it planned! The Christmas Markets are wonderful if you go in December.
Cold and snowy or hot and summery, Prague is a charming city and walkable. The Charles Bridge has an easily recognizable profile over the Vltava River. Go early before it’s crowded or late in the day when the gas lamps are hand lit. We’ve spent time in this city twice and there is still so much more to discover.
New on our last trip, was a stop in Pilsen en route from Munich. I’m sure I fell a little in love with this gem of a historical city. While English may not be as widely spoken as in metropolitan areas, we had no trouble communicating.
If your goal in visiting the Czech Republic is to hit the main tourist sites, you may want to go off season. We were there during the Christmas Markets and it was as busy as an August afternoon. Some historical locations fill up quickly, so check with your concierge upon arrival.

The grand architecture of the city makes it a photographer’s dream.
Pilsen, Czech Republic Blogs
Pilsen was a random stop for us, but rapidly became a favorite.
Prague and Pilsen both have good city transportation systems. Since most of the terrain is flat, we spend most of our days walking. A note on renting a car in Prague: I simply wouldn’t! Pedestrians have the right away—this morning, in the afternoon, and all evening long! Check out the metro system before bothering with a car, unless you’re heading out of town.
