The third largest of the Hawaiian Island, Oahu is the most populated at one million. Add to that the number of tourists who arrive annually and it is a hopping place. Don’t let that keep those of you who enjoy quiet from choosing this island.
Beaches of Oahu
Waikiki Beach is perfect for sunset views, quietly observed and shared with dozens of people. The orange colors meld and drop the orb into a blackened ocean. In the daytime, Waikiki is made for window shopping (or shopping!) and marveling at the various stores. Walk through the iconic Royal Hawaiian. You can’t miss it, given the deep pink that covers it. The Royal Hawaiian has captivated me since my father’s slides from 1952 when he was stationed at Schofield Barracks. We’ve stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki—it’s a central location just across from the beach.

Being on Oahu means touring Pearl Harbor and paying your respects at the Arizona Memorial. Take the time to tour the Bowfin Submarine (unless you’re claustrophobic!). Then shuttle over to visit Ford Island and the USS Missouri (Mighty Mo).
Check out the Pearl Harbor site here.
Natural Beauty on Oahu
If you’ve ever heard of surfing, you’ve heard of the North Shore. It is breathtaking! Diamond Head, seen in the distance from Waikiki. Leave the city to drive to the park and climb the many steps to the top. Driving through the central part of the island, you’ll find yourself enveloped in forests. Where did those million people go?
Oahu means relaxing and slowing to an island pace.
